Exploring translanguaging in CLIL

After reviewing the concepts of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Translanguaging, this article presents an exploratory study of translanguaging in CLIL contexts. Employing illustrative extracts from a collection of CLIL classroom recordings in Austria, Finland and Spain, we argue that both pedagogic and interpersonal motivations can influence language choices. We suggest that the L1 should be appreciated as a potentially valuable tool in bilingual learning situations and that there is a need for increased awareness-raising around this question. peerReviewed

Opettaja antaa usein korjaavaa palautetta (corrective feedback) oppilaidensa virheisiin, ja parhaassa tapauksessa palaute auttaa oppilaita oppimaan virheistään. Tutkielma pyrkii kartoittamaan erilaisia opettajien käyttämiä keinoja, kun he antavat korjaavaa palautetta oppilaiden puheessa tekemiin virheisiin. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli tarkastella, kuinka opettajan tapa kommunikoida luokkansa ja yksittäisten noin 15 18-vuotiaiden oppilaidensa kanssa vaikuttaa vallitsevaan oppimisilmapiiriin. Kysymystä tarkasteltiin fiktiivisten lähteiden kautta, ja aineistona käytettiin kolmea erilaista datanäytettä, jotka oli julkaistu eri vuosikymmeninä: Dead Poets Society (Kuolleiden runoilijoiden seura) 1980-luvulla, Dangerous minds (Levottomat sielut) 1990-luvulla ja Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix (Harry Potter ja Feeniksin kilta) 2000-luvun alussa. A methodological approach to exploring the rhythm of classroom discourse in a cumulative frame in science teaching

The purpose of this study was to characterise the nature and purpose of different types of classroom discourse and to explore how the rhythm of classroom discourse provides a cumulative frame for the teaching of science. The overall data consisted of a teaching sequence of eight lessons on the moment of force as taught to physiotherapy students at a Finnish University of Applied Sciences. Our in-depth multiple timescale analysis of two episodes illustrated in this study shows examples how cumulation was instantiated by the different types of classroom discourse. The methodology and findings of this study have implications both for teacher education and further research. peerReviewed
